The Orientation Programme of
Summer Semester-08 of Green University of Bangladesh was
held in the Mirpur Science Campus (211-212 Janata, Housing,
Shah Alibag, Mirpur-2) after an address of wel-came by Mr.
A.F.M. Golam Hossain, Hon’ble Registrar of the University.
He elaborated on the importance of acquiring knowledge and
facing the challenges of the 21st century,
especially in terms of university education. In his wel-come
speech Mr. Golam Hossain advised the students to go on with
their studies attentively and not to depend on
teachers/tutor only and added that every well educated man
is self educated. So in order to be an
educationist/scientist etc a student should be studious and
the future good or bad of student depends entirely on how he
will use himself in the important seat of learning, he
added. The Programme was presided over by Professor Dr.
Anwarullah Chowdhury, Hon’ble Vice-Chancellor of the
University.

Professor Dr. A.K.M. Fazlul Haque, founding Chairman of
Colorectal Surgery,
Bangabandu Sheikh Mujib Medical University and Chairman
Green University of Bangladesh in his address laid great
importance on the role of private University in spreading
education to the vast majority of the people of Bangladesh.
He said that as a result of the establishment of private
university, large number of meritorious students have
stopped going abroad for higher education and huge amounts
of foreign exchange has been saved. He also laid great
emphasis on the improvement of education of the
universities. “It will be a hope against hope to want
economic development of the country by keeping the younger
generation in the darkness of ignorance about modern
technology” he opined. He made a Commitment for appointment
of efficient/competent teachers and establishing good
quality laboratory and well equipped library.

Professor Dr. Mokbul Ahemd Khan, Hon’ble Vice-Chairman and
Treasurer of Green University of Bangladesh welcomed the
freshers and said that the students have merit, energy and
they are disciplined and they have the strength to lead the
country towards the door of prosperity and development. He
asked the students to burn the mid night oil and to have
sword in hard to fight against illiteracy and poverty. He
said that in Latin an educational institution is called
‘ALMA MATTER’ or education- mother, and made an urnest
appeal to the students community to come to the mother-like
highest seat of learning for getting knowledge and spread
through out the whole world for the service of humanity. He
said that student life is the most suitable time for laying
the foundation of the edifice of character. He told the
students to buildup their character so that they may be able
to make the country prosperous. He said that the university
authority will always stand by them in their well and woe
and have blessings like mother.

Mrs
Shahin Mahbuba Haque, Executive Director also welcomed the
young learners and addressed them as torch bearers of
education and advised them to leave no stone unturned for
acquiring knowledge and pledged to co-operate in all the
functions of the university.
· Professor
Dr. Anwarullah Chowdhury, Hon’ble Vice-Chancellor of the
university, in his presidential address advised the students
to be attentive to their studies. He said, “Education is a
voluntary process”. A teacher imparts education and the
taught receive it. The efforts of the learners do not become
crowned with success if any one side lag behind. Professor
Dr. Anwarullah Chowdhury said that there is no alternative
to study in Green
University and there is no short cut way of getting
certificate from here. He asked all and sundry to follow the
prescribed syllabus and to be absorbed in acquiring
knowledge. He emphasized the need to strengthen the
curriculum and said that the authority is always alert to
improve the standard of education, and it is the principle
of the university not to came to any compromise in this
respect. He expressed his firm determination to make it a
model university not only in Bangladesh but in South Asia
also. He said as a part of it, necessary arrangements have
been made to procure laboratory equipments for the faculties
of Textile Engineering, Electrical and Mechanical
Engineering, Physics and Chemistry. Bank Management &
Textile Engineering have already been started and the
faculties of Social Science and English will shortly start
functioning. Efforts to increase the facilities well
continue, he said.

He
also said that a specious house with modern facilities has
already been hired at Banani for shifting the varsity there
and land has been bought at Amin Bazar for establishing a
permanent campus of the university, and some teachers have
already been appointed. Professor Dr. Anwarullah Chowdhury
said that decision is going on to establish a campus in
London with immediate
effect.

He
said Dhaka University
did not become “oxford of the east” overnight, and library
of Dhaka University did not get all the books at a time. He
has high hope of Green University and there is not want of
sincerity in him, god wiling, he will try his level best to
turn the Green University of Bangladesh as one of the best
universities of South East Asia, he said. He sought
co-operation from all for the success of the university.

Professor Dr. M. Shamsul Alam, Dean, Faculty of Science,
Professor Dr. Anwarul Islam, Dean, Faculty of Business
Studies, Proctor, Mr. MFK Khan, Faculty of Law, Dr. Mohammad
Johurul Islam, Chairman, Faculty of Law, Students Affairs
Director, Dr. Habibur Rahman and Controller of Exams, Dr.
Chowdhury M. Saiful Islam including Teachers, Officers and
Staff and a good number of invited guests were present.

The
function dispersed after vote of thanks was given to the
guests and students by Mr. A.F.M. Golam Hossain, Registrar
of the varsity.
